What should your CV be like to be truly effective? Here are the most important rules.
Always write the truth! Even if your CV goes through during the interview, lies will come out during the job. Lies in the hiring process are easily exposed and lead to a loss of credibility for you as a candidate and your credibility.
Authentic is really yours!
A CV should show you in your most authentic way. This is only possible when you really know yourself well. What does that mean? You know your competencies, strengths, experiences, achievements, as well as your needs and career preferences.
Your CV should contain all the information you need such as name, phone number, email address, work experience, education, skills and foreign languages as well as a disclaimer. A photo, professional profile (which can be used to show, for example, career changes) and interests are also welcome. You can also add your place of residence (only the city, if this is important information! And note, if you’re willing to change your location for the sake of the job, this should be emphasised too!), LinkedIn links or a portfolio.
Only contain the most important information
A CV is not the place for your super detailed professional history or confession. You place there what is most relevant to the offer you are applying for. You choose (not to be confused with withholding!) the most important information and include it in the document, both in the experience itself (for example, as a director with 20 years of experience, you do not include information about internships – it can be omitted) and in other elements of the CV (such as skills or education). Not all information is important or may be useful for a particular proposal.
Tailor your proposal to the individual
Your CV must be relevant to the position you are applying for. However, you don’t need to create a new CV every time you apply. Find out as much as you can about the job you are applying for and adapt elements of your CV accordingly.
Aesthetics and legibility
Your resume should be written in a way that makes it painless for the recruiter to review, showing the most important information and making it easy to find. Text editing, spacing, margins, font size, font and alignment are important here. The data should also be consistent, e.g. the same date format.
Your CV should be checked for correct language, style, completeness and comprehension.
You can check spelling, typos and punctuation online. You can also have your CV checked by someone you trust, even if they do not work in the same field. It’s a good idea to check the effectiveness of your CV, i.e. write down in one place the offers you send your document to, the most important information about them and whether you have reached the next stage of the recruitment process. This will allow you to check the effectiveness of your document and make changes or adjustments if necessary. Remember that a CV is not always perfect, it is worth adapting as you go along.
